CLAUSS : USMC : FULL HOLLOW
This is an old pre 1900 vintage straight razor from Clauss Fremont, Ohio in very nice condition. These razors were made for WW1.
It is even believed by the still existing Clauss company that the USMC razors were made in the 1890's but they could have been made under contract prior to WWI.
The scales are Aqua Glass acrylic tapered with a faux ivory micarta wedge. This is a higher grade acrylic with superb optical clarity, excellent resisting to natural aging and heat resistance.
The blade is extremely clean with no rust, cracks, chips or disturbing stains. Just a few barely noticeable remaining shallow surface pits.
Has a nice mirror finish.
On the front tang it says: Clauss Fremont, Ohio
On the back of the tang it says:
U.S.M.C
Both engravings are still very prominent as most Clauss U.S.M.C. razors still in circulation are in far worse condition.
Total weight: 1.6 oz
Total cutting edge: 2.75 inches
Blade centers nicely and sits snug between the scales.
A very old vintage example of a Clauss Fremont, Ohio U.S.M.C.
Clauss Cutlery: it all started in 1877 when John and Henrie Clauss established Elyria shear works in Elyria, Ohio. The company moved to Fremont, Ohio in 1887. They produced scissors, shears, straight razors and serrated kitchen knives. In 1889 the name of the company was changed to Clauss Shear Co. In 1919 they merged with Henkel Co. to create Henkel-Clauss Co. At one time they were the largest manufacturer of scissors and shears. Clauss is now owned by Acme United Co. The USMC version were made for WWI.
